Caregiver indicted for defrauding 83-year-old client

DECATUR, GA – A Union City woman was indicted for allegedly cheating a DeKalb County senior she was hired to care for out of nearly $40,000.
Kimalika Aaesha Smith is charged with three counts of exploitation of an elder person and six counts of identity fraud for using the 83-year-old James Harte’s credit cards to make unauthorized purchases and obtain cash.

“It’s absolutely unconscionable that this woman would so blatantly take advantage of a man she was supposed to be taking care of,” DeKalb County District Attorney Robert James said. “We all have a responsibility to protect the most vulnerable members of our community. Ms. Smith betrayed that responsibility in the name of selfish greed, and now she must be held accountable.”

Smith was hired to be Harte’s in-home caretaker. However, between September 2014 and May 2015, She used two of his credit cards 67 times to make purchases and cash advances totaling $39,095.76.

Smith was arrested on June 29, 2015, and subsequently released the next day on bond.
She awaits trial.
